Boris Johnson to visit Caribbean following criticism over UK response to hurricane

Branson says Necker Island 'devastated'; promises help for BVI

There are a lot of ways to measure the strength of Hurricane Irma, including its viciously fast wind speeds, the multiple people it killed and the millions more left without power or with damaged houses.

"This story is about the tens of thousands of people who have lost their homes and their livelihoods", he continued.

Irma, now a category 2 storm, hit Georgia and SC with winds that peaked at 50 miles per hour, but higher gusts were reported by South Carolina's Emergency Management Division.

The U.S. sent an aircraft carrier and other Navy ships to assist in search-and-rescue operations in the Keys, where Irma touched down Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane. "Determined to help as many people as possible, Richard Branson went there two days in Puerto Rico, a territory also being ravaged by Irma, to bring provisions to the inhabitants".

As Irma hits Florida, she asks Americans to remember: "The U.S. Virgin Islands - they're residents as well".

"This is not St. John anymore".

Before heading to the British Virgin Islands, Mr Johnson visited Anguilla's Princess Alexandra Hospital, which suffered 60% damage as Hurricane Irma unleashed devastation, something he said was "pitiful" to witness.

Hurricane Irma's path of destruction will have a huge economic impact on the Caribbean, which depends on tourism and the image of a tropical paradise to lure greenbacks and Euros.

£6,500 worth of building materials and £20,000 worth of hardware have also been donated by the Gibraltarian government and businesses in the territory.

The entrepreneur is now helping to coordinate aid and help relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

But Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson insisted that Britain was responding strongly to an "unprecedented catastrophe". The government will soon add to its initial $42 million earmark, he said.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said there are just under 500 troops now in the region, made up of marines, engineers, medics and specialists, including Army and RAF personnel.

View of damages in Havana's Cojimar neighborhood on September 10, 2017, after the passage of Hurricane Irma. "There was looting and locals were getting violent because of a shortage of supplies". Many also live in wooden homes that are most vulnerable to a storm.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander flew to St. Martin on Monday to witness the flattened structures firsthand. The worldwide airport also was scheduled to resume operations Sunday.

Premeir Smith, in the meantime, said: "I would like to encourage all property owners to work closely with their insurance agents and quickly file claims so we can restore the Virgin Islands to the pristine and scenic landscape we have all come to know and enjoy".
