Boris May Bolt Over Brexit

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump meet for first time in public

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has announced that he will not resign from the cabinet over Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit strategies, putting an end to earlier speculations that he would step down over the issue following rifts with the premier.

No 10 said Friday's Florence speech was a "significant moment" and that the Prime Minister would welcome input from her most senior ministers before it is delivered.

On Friday night he published his vision for a "glorious" Brexit in which he said the United Kingdom should not pay any money to Brussels in order to access the single market after a transition period.

Publically Johnson has supported it but "privately he has told friends that a so-called "EEA minus" version of Brexit is something he "could not live with", according to the report.

Ms May on Tuesday dismissed suggestions of a cabinet split and expressed confidence that ministers would back her ahead of Friday's speech.

The foreign secretary told reporters in NY he would not resign and denied the cabinet was split over Brexit policy, insisting: "We are a nest of singing birds".

And asked directly if he would resign, he replied: "No".

The former Tory leadership hopeful spoke to TV cameras in NY after bumping into them on his return from a jog.

He also said that the reported dispute between Johnson and May is really just a sideshow, as hundreds of people are working on the "nuts and bolts" of Brexit behind closed doors.

Boris Johnson has claimed he is "mystified" by the furore over his recent Brexit intervention and revealed why he felt compelled to write a 4,000 article. Switzerland pays for access to the single market.

As Tory grandee Ken Clarke noted wryly, Mr Johnson would have "been sacked in any normal circumstances" and that the Cabinet needs to take collective responsibility for its Brexit negotiating position. She told reporters on Monday that Mr Johnson's article wasn't authorised and that she was in control.

Mr Johnson is understood to have misgivings about suggestions that Britain could remain closely tied to Brussels for years ahead after formally leaving the European Union in March 2017.

Mr Hogan, an Irish politician who is the EU's agriculture commissioner, said in an interview with the Evening Standard, "clearly, he [Mr Johnson] is not directly involved in the negotiations on behalf of the British Government with the European Union".
