Hungary & Slovakia Lose Refugee-Quota Protest

Hungary Closes Border With Croatia Migrants Flood Into Tiny Slovenia

Despite the court ruling, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said her country will stick by its refusal to take in refugees.

"Today's decision by the European Court of Justice on the relocation scheme sends a very strong signal on the importance of solidarity and responsibility sharing among EU Member States", UN refugee agency UNHCR said in a statement. "That mechanism actually contributes to enabling Greece and Italy to deal with the impact of the 2015 migration crisis and is proportionate", the judges said in their ruling.

As you know, the program of distribution of refugees, adopted in September 2015 by a majority of member States of the European Union, provided for the distribution of 160 thousand asylum seekers among European Union countries. The mechanism was adopted in September 2015 and was meant to relocate a total of 120,000 people.

The European Union has launched cases against Poland and Hungary as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia - the latter two have only taken in about a dozen migrants under the 2015 plan.

Other EU member states have dragged their feet despite having voted for the plan, with diplomats saying several cited the need to boost security checks following terror attacks.

The EU was accused of "raping" its own values yesterday after its top court ruled that countries should be forced to accept refugees under a relocation scheme.

According to the ECJ, Poland intervened on Hungary's behalf in the court battle.

The group's European Union office director, Iverna McGowan, said that "Slovakia and Hungary have tried to dodge the EU's system for solidarity, but each country has a role to play in protecting people fleeing violence and persecution".

Why didn't Hungary and Slovakia want to take in the asylum seekers?

Hungary's government, led by prime minister Viktor Orban, is facing elections next spring, which could entail more harsh rhetoric against Brussels and migration quotas during the campaign.

Hungary asked Brussels last week to pay €400 million towards the cost of security at its frontiers, and Mr Szijjarto complained that "the European Commission is not funding border protection, but only the admission of illegal immigrants".

As Deutsche Welle reports, "Only 24,000. refugees from Greece and Italy have been transferred to other states". The arrival of refugees, who are predominantly Muslim in their faith has created socio-political tensions in the block and given to the rise of populism in Europe and anti-immigrant parties.

Hungary has refused to accept a single refugee as part of its hard-line response to the crisis that also saw an electronic fence being built along its border.
