Hurricane Maria expected to strengthen near Leeward Islands: NHC

Hurricane Jose is traveling up the East Coast as a new threat forms in the Caribbean — here's the latest

Hurricane conditions could begin to affect parts of the Leeward Islands by Monday night, with storm surge raising water levels by 4 to 6 feet near the storm's eye. Rhode Island, New York City, Long Island and New Jersey are expecting heavy rain Tuesday through Wednesday.

The eye of Jose, with top sustained winds of 150 km/h, should remain off the U.S. east coast, the NHC said. Hurricane warnings and watches are out for some of the islands that that saw devastating damage from Irma, including Guadeloupe, the USA and British Virgin Islands, and St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Martinique, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The likelihood of Maria bringing storm surge, high rainfall totals and unsafe wind speeds has prompted a hurricane warning in Dominica and a tropical storm warning in St. Lucia.

This storm comes on the heels of Hurricane Irma, a powerful Category 5 storm that claimed more than two dozen lives across the Caribbean and southeastern United States.

The National Weather Service is warning about unsafe surf and rip currents along the us eastern seaboard.

The storm's sustained winds remained at 90 miles per hour and the storm was moving northwest at 9 miles per hour.

Maria is now moving west northwest at 15 miles per hour, but should decrease in speed as it nears the Lesser Antilles.

Forecast models generally agree on a track that takes Maria near Guadalupe and the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles today and near Puerto Rico tomorrow as a major hurricane.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Jose has weakened slightly as it churns north, but is sill threatening "dangerous surf and rip currents" along the US East Coast in the next few days, the hurricane center said. Maria packed top winds of 75 miles per hour as of early Sunday evening. In fact, there is a Tropical Storm Warning in effect from DE to southeastern MA.

Hurricane advisories continued to extend across Caribbean islands battered by Irma as the storm approaches.
