IAEA: Iran Complying With Nuclear Deal

Iran rejects US demand for inspection of its military sites

The flag of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) flies in front of IAEA's headquarters during a board of governors meeting in Vienna, Austria June 12, 2017.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the deal as too soft on Tehran and has left open the option of pulling out of the treaty that Washington and five other world powers agreed to with Iran just over two years ago.

The Iranian president referred to the Friday statements by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley who urged the IAEA to request access to Iranian military sites, in what is regarded as an attempt by the US to undermine the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

A US State Department spokesman confirmed Reuters reports that Haley neither asked the IAEA to visit specific sites nor offered new intelligence on any site.

Under the deal, most global sanctions were lifted in return for Iran undertaking long-term curbs on its nuclear programme, which the West suspected was aimed at developing the means to build an atomic bomb.

The U.N. body has sided with Iran over the U.S.in a row over whether it was necessary to inspect restricted Iranian military sites to ensure Iran was complying with a 2015 nuclear treaty.

"So the IAEA report does make it harder for the Trump administration to make its case for decertifying Iran's compliance. but that doesn't necessarily make it less likely to happen". Trump told The Wall Street Journal in July that he "did not expect" to declare Iran compliant in the coming months, despite a lack of public evidence of any Iranian violations.

"If they want to bring down the deal, they will", the official added, referencing the Trump administration.

The comments by Amano are significant - his agency is policing the deal capping atomic activities that Iran says are peaceful but the United States suspects are a covert pursuit of nuclear arms. "We just don't want to give them an excuse to".

"It's up to the IAEA to determine what they need to inspect, and where and when, to acquire the information they need to monitor and verify compliance with Section T, and I believe they have already developed an approach for doing so", Mr Kimball said.

The 2015 deal sought to allay fears that Iran was producing nuclear weapons by severely restricting its nuclear development in exchange for the lifting of billions of dollars' worth of worldwide sanctions against Tehran.

Iran has reiterated commitment to the terms of the deal despite Trump's stance, but has also said its military sites are off limits, raising the risk of a stand-off if a request for access were put to a vote.

As well as the United States the hard-fought agreement also includes China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

Iran now has less than a third of the amount of enriched uranium that it's permitted to have under the JCPOA.
