Karolina Pliskova qualified easily for the quarter-finals

Karolina Pliskova

The top seed, who needs to win her quarterfinal against either Lucie Safarova or CoCo Vandeweghe to have a chance of retaining her No.1 ranking, was ruthless in speeding through a second set bagel, breaking Brady three times - the final time denying the American from two game points down to seal a dominant display.

Should Pliskova reach the final in NY she will retain the world number one ranking, but a first grand slam title would be even greater reward for the 25-year-old. I was not really enjoying myself the first three matches.

Added Pliskova on the matchup, "I guess she just loves the crowd and the big stage, so she's going to always play well here on center court".

Keys overcame a 4-2 deficit in the third to win the last four games of the match to reach her first US Open quarterfinal.

She made sure she wouldn't have to play from behind again.

The onslaught was too much for the unseeded Dolgopolov, who was never comfortable enough to unleash his unconventional game that features unexpected drop shots and bold net approaches.

The American has been enjoying one of her best seasons, which began with a semi-final run at the Australian Open, a quarter-final finish at Wimbledon and a run to the final in Stanford.

Against world No. 91 Brady, Pliskova should be looking to progress comfortably.

Vandeweghe reached her third Grand Slam quarterfinal this year, part of a contingent of American women that includes Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens.

Plsikova will take on another American, Coco Vandeweghe, a 6-4, 7-6 victor Monday over Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. And I'm first seeded, so it's, like, totally different story.

With full-on confidence, a No. 22 ranking and "a little bit more variety", as she put it, she heads full-on into a bout with No. 1-ranked Karolina Pliskova. She had lost the first round and had to fight off a match ball in the second before making a rally to defeat Zhang Shuai 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

"It seems to me that she played very well today".

"I didn't expect this", said Kanepi who is ranked No. 418.

Former champion Juan Martin del Potro, the No 24 seed, faced sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem, with the victor getting Federer if the five-time champion can improve his 31-1 record in night matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I kind of hit a wall at the beginning of the second set", Keys said.

Keys showed incredible form against the fourth seeded Ukrainian, Svitolina, in her last round and will be a tough opponent if she can reproduce this performance. Del Potro had won his only major title in his career and had put an end to a series of five titles, Federer in NY.
