China warns tensions on Korean Peninsula at ‘tipping point’ after Pyongyang missile launch

U.S. Marine Corps F-35B fighter jet drop GBU-32 JDAM as they fly over South Korea.

North Korea bought into that kind of agreement in the past, before hardliners in the U.S. Congress undermined American compliance with the agreement.

Now that Bannon is gone, those surrounding Trump, especially three key former high-ranking USA generals, one being his new White House chief of staff, will have the challenge of trying to introduce a sense of reality in the president's dubious mind. O'Shaughnessy, commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces, referring to North Korea.

Mattis made the remarks on Wednesday while meeting his South Korean counterpart Soon Young-moo at the Pentagon to discuss ways to address the threat posed by North Korea, Xinhua news agency reported.

The two leaders confirmed their "continuing, close" cooperation on efforts to address North Korea's launch of an intermediate range ballistic missile this week, according to the White House.

The bombing exercise came as the United States and South Korea wrapped up their annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian joint military drills that involved tens of thousands of soldiers.

The incident was announced by South Korean officials who say the missile was launched from Sunan, near North Korea's capital, Pyongyang.

USA defence secretary Jim Mattis has refuted claims that he disagrees with President Donald Trump on the best strategy to handle tensions with North Korea. "All options are on the table", Trump explained.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries say the Hwasong-12 fired over Japan's northern island of Hokkaido flew about 2,700 kilometers (1,677 miles). Japanese Prime Shinzo Abe said he and visiting British Prime Minister Theresa May agreed to urge China, North Korea's lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea.

To prevent such an unthinkable action, saner heads must make every effort to refocus the US policy toward finding a workable non-military solution to the crisis.

The Security Council demanded Pyongyang to abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs "in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner" and immediately cease related activities.

His recent granting of a pardon to former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, facing sentencing for violating the rights of suspected illegal immigrants, shows the president has little regard for the US democratic system, including the rule of law.

Foreign ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said sanctions alone "cannot fundamentally resolve the issue", amid reports the three countries were pushing for new restrictions on North Korean oil imports and foreign workers.

The launch marks the second time in four days that North Korea has tested its missiles.

Britain, whose Prime Minister Theresa May is visiting Japan, has called for new United Nations sanctions against North Korea that would target guest workers sent mostly to Russian Federation and China, and whose wages are a source of revenue for Pyongyang. But the threat and the subsequent launch Tuesday may have won North Korea space to stage more weapons tests because anything less than targeting Guam would draw a sigh of relief from the United States.

"The situation is extremely serious".

"The current tense situation on the peninsula isn't a screenplay or a video game", she told reporters.
