A powerful quake of magnitude 7.1 struck Central Mexico on Tuesday, toppling dozens of buildings and killing at least 216 people in and around nearby states, and also triggering an eruption of Mexico's Popocat├ępetl volcano.

Majority were in the greater Mexico City area and in the states of Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Tlaxcala.

At least 200 people are dead after a strong natural disaster hit central Mexico on Tuesday afternoon.

The epicenter of Tuesday's quake was located in the central state of Puebla, the U.S. Geological Survey said. They've been digging through the rubbled remains of Mexico City to locate survivors, having burrowed through what's left of a primary school to find what must have been a truly harrowing sight: 22 children who had died in the quake. As of midnight Wednesday, 30 people who either worked at or attended the school were still missing.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto asked citizens to remain calm in a video message.

Local media reported extensive damage, power outages and fires throughout Mexico City, one of the most populous urban areas in the world. Morelos, just to Mexico City's south, saw 71 deaths.

Another powerful quake hit the land of Mexico, this time closer to the populated city. Several are confirmed dead and some say the damage is even worse than the 8.0 Quake that hit the country just eleven days ago.

He added that he saw a woman fainting as 'people started to run'. Below you see a graph published by CNN based on the information of the US Geological Survey, with the intensity of this quake.

Moises Amador Mejia, a 44-year-old employee of the civil protection agency, worked late into the night looking for people trapped in a collapsed building in Mexico City's bohemian Condesa neighborhood.

The official death toll had reached 217 by the time of reporting, with much attention focussed on a collapsed school in the capital that buried dozens of children.

Almost 100 of those deaths occurred in Mexico City, where dozens of buildings collapsed.
