Pope hopes Trump will 'rethink' DACA decision on pro-life grounds

Pope Francis Attacks President Trump on Climate

Flying from Colombia back to Rome late September 10, Pope Francis was asked about U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed some 800,000 young people brought to the United States illegally as children to stay in the country, working or going to school. Over the last several years, Francis made his first official trip outside of Rome to the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa to commemorate North African migrants who die trying to get to Europe; called on every Catholic parish in Europe to take in a Syrian refugee family; surprised 2,000 immigrant shelter residents near the Vatican with Christmas presents; and blessed USA children with parents in deportation proceedings.

Politicians who call themselves pro-life must be pro-family and not enact policies that divide families and rob young people of a future, Pope Francis said.

Francis told reporters that it was important for young people to have roots, referring to the program's previous rulings that deferred deportations for those who arrived to the US before the age of sixteen.

Trump announced September 5 that he was phasing out the program; his decision was strongly criticized by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Francis said he hopes Trump rethinks the decision.

Pope Francis wrapped up his Colombia trip with a deeply personal final day Sunday honoring St. Peter Claver, a fellow Jesuit who ministered to hundreds of thousands of African slaves who arrived in the port of Cartagena to be sold during Spanish colonial times. After the election, the two heads of state settled for a sort of détente: Francis welcomed the president and his family to the Vatican earlier this year for an awkward photo op and a brief meeting on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace, during which the pope slipped Trump two somewhat backhanded gifts: a signed copy of his 2017 peace message ("Nonviolence-A Style of Politics for Peace") and a copy of his 2015 encyclical letter on climate change. Pope Francis feels good, despite the slight trauma he received yesterday in a collision with the papamobile in Colombia, Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said on Monday.

Pope Francis has told Colombian Catholics that faith is not measured by how well they follow rules, but by the depth of their prayer life and the degree to which it pushes them to share the Gospel. If someone has doubts about man-made climate change, they must go to the scientists, and then make their decisions: "And history will judge the decisions".

The Pope has previously criticized Trump for his desire to build a wall along the Mexican border and deport all undocumented aliens, claiming it was "not Christian".

Pope Francis hasn't held back his strong feelings about Trump's views on immigration.

For those who have denied climate change, or delayed actions to counter it, he responded with an Old Testament saying: "Man is stupid". "I didn't see the glass".
