Range anxiety may reduce in Sri Lanka as Nissan turns new Leaf

Nissan's new Leaf (2018) uses one pedal to get you to your electric dreams

Interviewed by our British colleagues at Autocar, Alfonso Albaisa, head of design Nissan, admitted that a sports version could help the model to improve its image, after a first generation Leaf with a pataud design. In addition, one of its most unique features is its e-pedal.

The company revealed the new auto in Tokyo, Japan, seven years since the launch of the first Nissan Leaf in 2010. The base model of the Chevrolet Bolt EV makes 200hp and 360Nm of torque and has a range of 380km.

Besides giving your ankle a rest, it also maximises range - helping deliver a respectable 235 miles from a single charge.

The all-new 2018 Nissan Leaf will go on sale in all 50 US states early next year.

Does the new Leaf offer enough to compete with the latest electric vehicles from General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) despite its more limited range?

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the Leaf begins to lose speed and the e-Pedal will hold the vehicle - even on steep inclines - without the brake pedal having to be applied. The range also depends on what other features are being used such as the car's heater. However, the 2018 LEAF does employ high-tech driver-assist features, such as ProPilot Assist, Nissan's lane-centering intelligent cruise control.

The next-generation Nissan Leaf will go into production at the end of 2017 at plants in Japan, the United Kingdom and the U.S., the brand has confirmed. He also said developing Nismo parts for the new Leaf wouldn't be much of a challenge - so it seems a Leaf with a sporty Nismo lip kit, a rear hatch spoiler, larger wheels and more is on the horizon.

Nissan officials also confirmed during the ride and drive that the Japanese automaker will offer a 60-watt battery for the Leaf's powertrain in 2019, elevating the both the horsepower and range.

Koichi Sugimoto, analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities in Tokyo, says many automakers are selling green models because of tightening emissions regulations, especially in Europe and California, rather than because of what he called "natural sales growth". While offering less range than those models, most buyers can expect to pay several thousands of dollars less for a LEAF than for a Bolt or Tesla Model 3. This is is essentially an advance cruise-control that allows the vehicle to stay in its lane and continue performing in stop-and-go traffic - not revolutionary, and not almost as ambitious as Tesla Autopilot - but it is a very nice addition.

Contrast that with the Leaf, which comes nicely equipped (aside from the range issue) for just under $30,000 - or about $22,500 after US government incentives.
