Ryanair reassigns flights for half of affected customers

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary warns of more flight cancellationsMore

Mr O'Leary said some pilots had been offered a 10,000-euro pay rise in exchange for helping out.

Ryanair is cancelling 40-50 flights every day for the next six weeks, after it admitted it had "messed up" the planning of pilot holidays.

According to Sky News, Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said on Thursday that that the firm would recruit 125 pilots in the next week or two and increase pay for others.

The cancellations are estimated to have cost the airline around €25m (£22m).

When asked about reports that pilots are threatening industrial action Mr O'Leary responded: "If you want and need to ask your staff to give up holidays no work to rule can alter that".

He said that those due to take a four-week block of holiday in the next few months because of that change in annual leave rotas would be told to cut that to three weeks.

He said however that if pilots "misbehave there will be no goodies".

Former airline pilot Terry Tozer told Julia Hartley-Brewer: "They've not been treated, and in fact even when I was still at it, pilots were not treated as the highly trained professionals that they should be by many companies".

The Irish Air Line Pilots' Association says the real problem is that Ryanair failed to plan for the implementation of new European safety regulations that take effect January 1 and require all airlines to use a regular calendar year for calculating pilot flight hours and working days.

They are said to be looking for permanent local contracts for all employees.

One passenger told the Daily Telegraph that the website would not let them book on a flight "unless I paid twice for the seats and bags". With pilots rejecting the latest offer, there is a risk of more cancellations in the future.

The letter, which the BBC said comes from staff all over Europe, reportedly says new contracts will stop the large exodus of Ryanair pilots to competitors.

The rules are very clear about what airlines' obligations are, and Ryanair has been around long enough to know what it needs to do.

Ryanair expects to have processed over 300,000 alternative routings or refunds for customers - over 95% of affected customers - by the end of this week.
