Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapons Opens For Signature

The United Nations General Assembly

With the North Korean nuclear crisis looming large, 51 countries today lined up to sign a new treaty outlawing nuclear weapons that has been fiercely opposed by the United States and other nuclear powers.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on behalf of the Philippines on Wednesday, September 20.

There are strong suggestions some states, such as Saudi Arabia, wish to possess nuclear weapons, but conclusive evidence and/or proof of these ambitions remains elusive.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, as it is officially known, will enter into legal force 90 days after being ratified by 50 countries.

Their ultimate objective: to convince all the world's nations to sign and comply with the treaty, eliminating the nuclear-weapon threat completely.

Japan, the last country to be hit with a nuclear weapon, did not sign on to the agreement either, according to the AP.

It is assumed nine countries possess nuclear weapons - the US, UK, Russia, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea, and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) estimates they collectively hold roughly 15,000 nuclear warheads. Campaigner Clare Bonetree, from Chorlton, said: "This treaty provides the first real opportunity in decades to advance the global elimination of nuclear weapons, which would make us all safer". "But we need to do more to get the whole way there". It will keep us on track for achieving our goal of a world in which nuclear weapons exist only in movies or books.

"There is no way to win in a nuclear conflict", SolĂs said.

Guyana, the Vatican and Thailand have already ratified the treaty. In a joint statement released after the treaty's adoption by the conference, the U.S., British, and French governments declared: "We do not intend to sign, ratify, or ever become party to it".

"Recent steps in the nuclear disarmament field are encouraging", said Shannon Kile, head of SIPRI's Nuclear Weapons Project. He called the nuclear ban treaty "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible".

NATO said the ban treaty risked undermining the NPT, which seeks to prevent the spread of atomic weapons but also puts the onus on nuclear states to reduce their stockpiles.

Yet, the move was seen as only symbolic, since all the nuclear-armed states and several other countries did not take part in the July vote.
