Trump Waives Jones Act for Puerto Rico Relief

"I am very concerned by the Department's decision not to waive the Jones Act for current relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis following Hurricane Maria", McCain wrote to acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke this week.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the act was lifted Thursday morning, and it "will go into effect immediately".

Earlier this week, Mr Trump sent "America's hearts and prayers" to the people in Puerto Rico and the nearby US Virgin Islands, along with his confirmation he will visit both places next week.

In a statement about the issues, the FDA says, "We are aware of several other instances where we may soon face critical shortages if we don't find a path for removal or ways to get production back up and running".

In Puerto Rico, there is still a struggle to deliver aid to those who need it most after Hurricane Maria.

Waterbury schools are getting ready to welcome students from Puerto Rico.

During a briefing, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) said she found the conditions "shocking" when she visited the island on Friday.

Shipping company Crowley said it had 3,000 containers there, filled with clothes, food, medicine, water, construction materials and even cars.

His administration lifted the Jones Act to help Texas and Florida after hurricanes Harvey in August and Irma this month. Because it's an island, many lifesaving supplies will arrive by boat. "Now Congress must repeal this law to aid long-term recovery". Now foreign-flagged vessels also will be able to move shipments from the USA mainland to Puerto Rico and between ports there. We welcome more help.

Rubio said the Trump administration is concerned about victims on the island.

FEMA's Long told CNN that relief operations had been hindered by damage to the transport infrastructure, adding, "The situation is not allowing things to move as quickly as we would all like".

Military personnel are playing a sizeable role. The administration waived restrictions Thursday on foreign ships delivering supplies to the island.

It also was shipping a large generator to power a radar center to help air traffic control in San Juan and other airports.

The $40 million in "quick release" funds is meant to restore essential traffic on Puerto Rico's roads and limit further damage, in order to facilitate long-term fix work and recovery efforts. Scott gave reassurances that Florida will do all it can to speed supplies to Puerto Rico.
