Trump Wants A Grand Military Parade For The Fourth Of July

Police cross a check point outside the United Nations building before the arrival of President Donald Trump on Monday Sept. 18 2017 in New York

Trump said he wanted the U.S.to have "a really great parade to show our military strength".

But their relationship has since grown close, highlighted by Trump's visit to Paris in July where they held talks and watched a military parade to mark France's annual Bastille Day holiday and the 100th anniversary of the USA entry into World War One.

President Trump has been keen for some time to establish more gaudy public displays of American military might, having pushed for military vehicles to participate in his inauguration.

Although Trump is deeply unpopular in France, he was invited for the 100th Bastille Day ceremony in Paris by Macron in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and their new leaders.

Macron rode in the Bastille Day parade standing upright in an open-top military command auto, surrounded by hundreds of military guards on horseback. "It was 2 hours on the button and was military might", Trump said, according to a pool report. And to a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July 4th in Washington down Pennsylvania.

"Noting the US refusal today, I want that the contact group advances and that the United Nations and France can serve as intermediaries with Iran", Macron said.

"We're going to have to try and top it", he said of the Bastille Day parade.

Trump had previously expressed an interest in including military vehicles in his inaugural parade.

During a January interview with The Washington Post, President-elect Trump spoke of a desire to use such a parade "to display our military".

The US does not have a history of major military parades marching through its cities, except to celebrate wartime victories. "We're speaking to General John Kelly and all the other people involved to see if we can do that this year, but we certainly will be beginning to do that".

This would not be the first military parade the USA has held, but there has not been one in D.C.in decades - not since 1991. I think we're looking forward to doing that. General Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded US forces in the war, led the parade.
