Trump's Voter Fraud Panel Unlikely to Recommend Reforms

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan takes the stage to thank supporters with her husband Tom daughter Meg and family friend Liz Murphy

Americans should thank Kris Kobach for his timely demonstration that President Donald Trump's "election integrity" commission is the scam its critics have been claiming all along.

In response to questions about the difference between domicile and residency in New Hampshire, Smith explained that state courts have ruled that domicile, not residency, determines voting rights.

PAM FESSLER, BYLINE: When the president's commission first met in July, Vice President Mike Pence, the chairman, had some reassuring words.

This sentiment that facts were manipulated to keep Democrats from voting - and to make progressives look bad - was also reciprocated by State Senate Democratic Leader Jeff Woodburn.

Trump formed the commission to support his professed belief that his presidential opponent a year ago, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, won millions of votes from people who were not authorized to vote, had not properly registered as voters or voted multiple times. During the following panel, titled "Current Election Integrity Issues Affecting Public Confidence", Kobach took the opportunity to tout the eight prosecutions of fraud he has pursued in Kansas, as well as two more he now has "in the hopper".

"Strangely, the issue of Russian tampering in our elections has not been a focus of the commission". New Hampshire law does not require people to be "residents" to register and vote.

It's a state where the president claims thousands of people were bussed in from MA to vote illegally.

The specter of "voter fraud" has served as the Republican boogeyman for any election result that the party simply doesn't like. In 2016, the towns with the highest rates of voters who registered using out-of-state IDs were all home to college campuses.

The real-estate magnate won the White House in a vote by the Electoral College, the body established under the Constitution that formally selects the US president. The Electoral College vote usually mirrors the outcome of the USA popular vote, but not always. But he also clarified his claims about the state, acknowledging that New Hampshire allows college students and others in similar situations living in the state to vote in the state without getting driver's licenses.

White House Policy Adviser Stephen Miller and other Republicans have contended since Election Day that a considerable number of nonresident Democrats - primarily from MA - traveled to New Hampshire in order to vote illegally and tip the scale to give Clinton the win over Trump. The advocacy group Common Cause states in a new report that the request led more than 5,000 Colorado voters to deregister so that their personal information would not be sent to Washington. To be clear, there is no proof of widespread illegal voting or voter fraud in the 2016 election - or in any American election.

But experts said that is no evidence of voter fraud. The state legally allows registered voters to cast ballots after identifying themselves with out-of-state licenses-"proof", Kobach says, that the election results were skewed by illegal votes against Trump. "To purposely come up with ways to deprive am citizens the right to vote is wrong", King said in an interview with AL.com on Tuesday.

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap is hoping the panel's work will put the issue to rest.

Lacking a single woman or person of color, the 12-member panel who presented at Tuesday's day-long hearing did little to assuage criticism that the commission's mission is little more than a smokescreen to incite voter-suppression laws. But that does not mean they are not eligible to vote in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire is where the nation's first presidential primary is held every four years.

Popper, the director of Judicial Watch's Election Integrity Project, has threatened to sue states and counties unless they purged their voter rolls of supposedly ineligible voters.

One speaker, John Lott, an economist known for his writings against gun control laws, proposed making voters go through the same federal background check system used for firearm purchases.
