US, Russian generals talk face-to-face on Syria

US-backed forces in Deir ez Zor province

Both the US and Russian Federation have embedded special forces with their respective partners and are supporting their advances with aggressive air strikes.

Russian officials blamed Washington's policies in Syria for Asapov's death.

His death was "the price paid in blood" for US hypocrisy, Russia's deputy foreign minister said.

On 16 September, the group said six of its fighters were wounded in air strikes by government and Russian warplanes in the al-Sinaaiya area around seven kilometres from the eastern bank of the Euphrates.

Also on Monday, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia accused Russian Federation of killing one of its fighters and wounding others in strikes on a gas facility it captured two days earlier from the Daesh terror group in eastern Syria.

"The senior commander of the Military Advocates Group, Lieutenant General Valeriy Asapov, was at the command line of the Syrian troops, where he helped to run the release of the city of Deir Ez Zor", a ministry message said.

The Syrian army's liberation operation in Deir Ezzor is facing strong resistance and massive fire from areas where militant groups and US-backed forces are stationed.

A Kurdish fighter of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), made up of an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters, walks through the village of Sabah al-Khayr on the northern outskirts of Deir Ezzor as they advance to encircle the ISIS terrorist group's bastion of Raqa on February 21, 2017.

A Kurdish commander of the SDF, which has approached along the east bank with United States jets and special forces, said the alliance is expected to completely push ISIL out of its former Syrian headquarters of Raqqa within a month.

Iran, a strong backer of the Syrian government, needs Deir al-Zour to secure a land corridor from Tehran to its Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah.

"The operation of Syrian troops aimed to destroy the last IS stronghold in Deir al-Zour".

The UK based Syrian Observatory for human rights reported that fighting was ongoing around the gas fields, and that several wells had been set alight as of Friday. It says two people were wounded Sunday.
