The review however focuses on a number of mental health standards that can be adopted across all workplaces at little or no cost and urges employers of all sizes to commit to these six core standards around mental health.

The Mind chief executive Paul Farmer, who co-authored the Thriving At Work report said that mental health seemed to be a taboo subject in the workplace.

The report of the first phase of a Government-commissioned review of mental health services for children and young people in England has been officially released today (Friday 27 October).

However, so-called "presenteeism" can be costing up to £26 billion, with employees coming into work despite mental health issues, resulting in a loss of productivity. Following this, CQC will make full recommendations to encourage improvement in the mental health system for children and young when we publish our thematic review in March 2018.

At the same time, people with mental health problems are losing their jobs at double the rate of people without such conditions.

The report says that people suffering from mental health issues costs the United Kingdom economy up to £99 billion a year, and claims there is a lack of support from employers.

He said it was always challenging within the society to discuss health issues with the stigma attached to mental issues, adding that mental health patients can be productive within the workplace, "and by raising this awareness, we can help reduce the stigma by bringing out to the public that there are professionals who are ready and available to help those in need".

These recommendations are based on best practice or evidence, and the authors state there is a "pressing need" for more robust evidence about what works to support improved mental health at work.
