White House Chief of Staff Kelly dismisses quitting rumors

Trump's Homeland Security candidate Nielsen

White House chief of staff John Kelly dismissed reports that he is frustrated in his job and considering leaving.

"It's amusing, I read in the paper-you all know, you write it-that I have been a failure at controlling the president or a failure at controlling his tweeting and all that", Kelly said.

And while the president has not said anything critical of Kelly, and in fact, has had nothing but praise for the retired Marine Corps general, reports have circulated that tensions between the two have been brewing.

Trump has hinted at a preference for military options, although a strike on North Korea could leave close USA ally South Korea vulnerable to North Korean military retaliation.

Kelly also said he doesn't believe Trump's combative use of Twitter threatens his agenda, saying, "The president has a right to defend himself".

There have been reports that Kelly is unhappy in the job as Trump's legislative agenda stalls and the president continues to picks fights with everyone from senators to National Football League players to a mayor in hurricate-hit Puerto Rico. Vanity Fair reported Wednesday that Kelly was "miserable in his job and is remaining out of a sense of duty to keep Trump from making some sort of disastrous decision". It is astounding to me how much is misreported.

Kelly also noted that "Congress has been frustrating" to the President.

When asked by one reporter about how he phrased his "not so frustrated" comment and if he felt foiled in any way, the chief of staff continued with a response similar to his prior remarks. "I was not brought to this job to control anything but the flow of information to our president so that he can make the best decisions". "But I would just offer to you the advice", he added. Kelly said Americans should be "concerned" about North Korea since it has developed an intercontinental ballistic missile capability and is developing a vehicle that would allow a missile to survive re-entry into the earth's atmosphere.

Kelly also said of Trump: "I hear him most say about nuclear weapons that, "Wouldn't it be great if we could get rid of them all?' as opposed to 'We need 10 times more". Kelly was elevated to the post from homeland security secretary in July.
