Why does the President pardon the turkey?

There they will join Tater and Tot, the two turkeys pardoned a year ago by President Obama.

Trump was headed to his Florida estate later Tuesday for Thanksgiving.

Barron Trump joins his father as the president pardons Drumstick, the national Thanksgiving turkey, in the Rose Garden at the White House on November 21, 2017. "I have been informed by the White House counsel's office that Tater and Tot's pardons can not under any circumstances be revoked".

Trump will pardon the turkeys in a Rose Garden ceremony on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday pardoned a turkey named Drumstick and jokingly bemoaned that his lawyers wouldn't let him overturn the clemency former President Barack Obama granted to a pair of birds named Tater and Tot ahead of Thanksgiving a year ago.

Although Drumstick was chosen as the 2017 National Thanksgiving Turkey via an online vote, both birds will live out their days in Virginia.

The turkeys, Drumstick and Wishbone, arrived in Washington, D.C. on Sunday from Alexandria. "He was a tough cookie".

President George H.W. Bush brought it back in 1989.

President Trump has threatened no shortage of Obama-era policies and decisions, with last year's pardoning of Tater and Tot proving to be no exception.

One of the more surreal yet presumably easier official duties of the President of the United States is the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon. Recent honorees were chosen by vote on social media.
