UAE applauds military campaign by Yemen ex-president against Houthis

Yemen rebel alliance crumbles as'street war rocks capital

Unverified footage circulated by Yemeni social media users on Monday appeared to a show corpse resembling Saleh.

Abdel-Rahman al-Ahnomi, a top Houthi media official, told The Associated Press that Saleh was killed near Marib, the eastern province bordering Saudi Arabia. The Houthis' Interior Ministry said Saleh was killed by rebels from the Shiite group.

In response, Houthi chief Abdul-Malek al-Houthi made a surprise speech this morning, calling on Saleh and tribal leaders to intervene to stop the internal bloodshed and reunite the internal ranks to face the "aggression", in reference to the Saudi-led military coalition.

Witnesses say that fighting has subsided in the Yemeni capital Sanaa hours after the announcement of the death of Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The ex-president also called for an end to the "militia's rule on Yemen's land", adding that the Houthis had continued their "provocative acts against Yemeni citizens".

The former Yemeni president's break with the Houthis came after five days of bitter clashes around the capital, Sana'a, between his supporters and those of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.

The Houthis had branded him a traitor for allegedly striking a deal with Saudi Arabia.

Yemen expert Nadwa Dawsari, of non-profit Project on Middle East Democracy, said Saleh's killing could have grave consequnces for the country.

Saleh ruled Yemen for more than three decades until he was forced to resign following the Arab Spring uprising of 2011.

Smoke rises during the battle between former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's supporters and Houthi rebels in Sanaa on December 2.

The Houthis and forces allied to Saleh swept into the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

Yemen's war has killed more than 10,000 people since 2015, displaced more than two million people, and caused a cholera outbreak infecting almost one million people.

In this January 3, 2017 file photo, tribesmen loyal to Houthi rebels chant slogans during a gathering aimed at mobilizing more fighters into battlefronts to fight pro-government forces. Iran supports the Houthis but denies arming them. The fighting and bombing have killed over 10,000 civilians, displaced around 3 million people, and led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
