Children's Health-Care Myths

Child CHIP Congressional Budget Office

The Congressional Budget Office produced a new cost estimate for extending the Children's Health Insurance Program, finding that a 10-year extension would produce net savings of $6 billion.

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., on Thursday announced that he is co-sponsoring a Senate bill that would extend the Children's Health Insurance Program for five years as Congress negotiates restoring funding for the program.

The mechanics are wonky, but this is the gist: Repealing the mandate increases ACA premiums; because ACA coverage is the alternative to CHIP for many kids, it would cost the federal government more if CHIP were to end and those children moved to the ACA markets.

That's why I am outraged that the majority in Congress has refused to act to renew the Children's Health Insurance Program, commonly referred to as CHIP. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) said he plans to bring a six-year extension of CHIP to the floor for a vote next week.

"We really have to hope Congress acts on it, because it's too big a hole for the state to have pick up, " said Flores, chairwoman of the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. In December, Congress provided $2.85 billion to temporarily fund the program.

If that accident happened later this year, though, Natali, 50, of Aliquippa, Pa., might be scrambling. Funding for the program expired in September, though Congress approved a short-term spending package in December. These low-income families need assurance CHIP payments will be there in the future. Every single state in America - 50 out of 50 states - has a CHIP program. However long an extension they land on, lawmakers said, all signs point that CHIP will at the very least get funded in the January 19 continuing budget resolution that Congress needs to pass to avert a government shutdown. "I have said from day one that my first priority when I arrived in Washington would be to protect the 150,000 Alabama children - and the nine million more across the nation - who depend on CHIP for their healthcare". The CHIP benefits allow him to continue his work as a civil rights attorney, providing free representation for people with disabilities. I have long supported the CHIP program.

Ariel Haughton of Pittsburgh said she's upset her federal lawmakers have left CHIP in flux for her two children and millions of kids around the country.

"Families across America had to start 2018 anxious that their kids wouldn't have health care", she tweeted.
