China Has More Potential to Harm US — CIA Director

CIA Director Mike Pompeo seen here in May 2017 said he expects Russia will try to meddle in the U.S. midterm elections

Russian Federation will more than likely try to meddle in the 2018 U.S midterm elections, CIA Director warned in an interview Monday.

"Think about the scale of the two economies", Mr Pompeo said of Russian Federation and China. In his remarks to almost 200 AEI members and guests, Director Pompeo highlighted his approach to leading the Agency and his strong belief that the CIA workforce should be positioned to execute our mission free from unnecessary obstacles and overbearing bureaucracy. President Trump has publicly doubted the intelligence community's findings, but the CIA said in November that stands by the assessment attributing Russian Federation with interfering in the 2016 election.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) head said the Chinese efforts were not restricted to the USA alone, and extended to Europe, including Britain.

"We see it in our schools. We see it in our hospitals and medicals systems", he claimed.

Looking ahead to 2018, Director Pompeo highlighted his plans to continue empowering the men and women of Central Intelligence Agency to be agile, creative, speedy, and adaptable while ensuring that we preserve the American people's trust.

The US spy chief said that the worldwide community could collectively do more to combat Chinese efforts to exert power over the West.

Pompeo said there are many "possible" ways to remove Kim from power, and, concerning Trump's tough rhetoric, that North Korea's leader "understands the message that America is serious".

"We're going to work on those complicated problem sets and push back against the Iranians everyplace we can", he told the BBC.

The case involving Jerry Chun Shing Lee, a naturalised USA citizen, is believed to be related to the dismantling of the U.S. network of informants in China over two years before his arrest, with some 20 agents killed or arrested.

But officials did not know at the time whether to blame a mole or data hack.

Mr Pompeo said Chinese attempts to exert influence ranged from human and cyber espionage to the alleged theft of stolen intellectual property to help its businesses.

But it also includes the way in which it uses its economic weight to influence American companies seeking access to its market.

Asked if he had to walk a "fine line" given the President's dismissal of investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election as "fake news", Pompeo said "I don't do fine lines".

"I am confident that America will be able to have a free and fair election".
