Padmaavat protests: Supreme Court to hear plea by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh today

Members of the Rajput community protest against the release of the upcoming Bollywood movie'Padmavat in Mumbai recently

The top court last week set aside the notification passed by the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat to ban the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial Padmaavat scheduled to be on January 25. Local BJP MLA Raja Singh has also called out against the film's release.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday said that the Madhya Pradesh government is yet taking any decision on Padmaavat's release.

If the State governments succumb under such threats, the majesty of the law will be in tatters and more and more fringe elements will feel emboldened to take the law into their own hands. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, 15 people were arrested at the DND flyover in Noida after the toll plaza was attacked by a mob of 150-200 people claiming to be part of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena.

However, he warned, in case cinema halls screened the movie, they will be responsible for the consequences.

Despite the changes, several states including Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh had banned its screening, following which its producers appealed to the Supreme Court. Director of the association, Rakesh Patel said "everyone is scared" and they don't want to bear any loss.

Earlier on Sunday, thousands of women organized a "Chetavni (warning) rally" in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh town.

MUMBAI Indian state governments made a last-ditch attempt yesterday to ban a Bollywood film about a mythical Hindu queen that has sparked violent protests by radical groups.

Meanwhile, two bodies which have been protesting against the film - Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena and Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha, also moved the apex court seeking their impleadment as parties, opposing its release on grounds including that it hurt the sentiments of the community.

"Karni Sena would impose curfew inside theatres while the public would do the same outside", he said.
