Trump Administration May End Funding For The International Space Station

Sinking International Space Station to be much bigger problem than it was with Mir

The International Space Station has been continuously occupied since 2000. Ending the station's funding in 2025 would end those partnerships. The US has spent some $87 billion to built and operate the ISS since 1993.

Two other companies, Axiom, and Nanoracks, are planning commercial space stations. In an audit report by the Office of Inspector General, dated January 11, 2018, it was stated that NASA was expecting to spend between $3 and $4 billion annually to support the ISS operations through 2024.

In 2014, the Obama administration extended NASA's funding for the International Space Station to 2024, securing funding for an extra ten years. Online publication The Verge reported the Trump administration wants to end government funding of the ISS by 2025. "Such a move would likely decimate Florida's blossoming commercial space industry, which is one of the reasons why Congress has directed NASA to look at extending the ISS to 2028 and to provide a plan to help scientists and researchers continue experimenting in low-Earth orbit beyond that".

A NASA spokesperson declined to comment on the budget draft, but noted the program's importance to human space travel. Companies like SpaceX, Orbital ATK and Sierra Nevada Corp are paid billions to fly cargo and supplies there.

Funding for the International Space Station is crucial to maintaining our main presence in space, and this habitable artificial satellite located in low Earth orbit is an important part of scientific research and advancement of our knowledge of space. In an interview, Bob Bigelow, the company's chief executive, said that he plans to launch two space habitats to low Earth orbit by 2021.

The White House has said repeatedly that it intends to recommit the nation to space exploration, in partnership with the private sector and the global community. One of them is even attached to the station now, as a test site. The administration also seeks to establish a space station, called Deep Space Gateway, in the vicinity of the moon.

In the same appearance, he also touched upon the future of the ISS.
