Who Will Be Left at Michigan State When the Reckoning Ends?

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis has announced his retirement in a press conference on Friday as a result of the Larry Nassar scandal. The most obvious investigative target is former gymnastics coach Kathie Klages, who resigned past year shortly after she was suspended by Michigan State once school officials began to realize the seriousness of the Nassar case.

Hollis said during his resignation that had no idea a predator was working on his staff.

Hollis said he didn't feel pressured to step down as AD, but talking with family and coworkers led him to the decision. "That being said, today I am announcing my retirement", Hollis said in a statement released by the university. And in sentencing to 40 to 175 years in prison Wednesday, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina called for "a massive investigation as to why there was inaction, why there was silence". Several of the victims who addressed the court were former athletes at the university, and many victims charged the school with mishandling complaints about Nassar as far back as the late 1990s.

The US Olympic Committee on Thursday ordered the entire board of USA Gymnastics to resign by next week - and a spokesperson said Friday they will comply.

Authorities want to determine who knew of Nassar's years-long abuse - and they will probe other allegations of harassment against USA Swimming and USA Taekwondo.

The pressure on Michigan State was illustrated by the resignation of the school's president, Lou Anna Simon, just hours after the sentencing. The school's governing board expressed support for Simon, but she eventually succumbed to pressure from students, faculty and lawmakers.

Alytė Katilius, a freshman from New Lenox, Illinois, said she was disgusted that people reportedly heard about Nassar's abuse years ago and let it happen.

While the university president, Lou Anna Simon, resigned earlier this week after vast pressure from board members, that does little to make up for the years of neglected abuse. Board member Joel Ferguson apologized this week for saying previously that some victims were ambulance chasers seeking a payday.

Michigan State argued that much of Nassar's abuse fell outside the scope of his employment. The school's president and athletic director have resigned.

Simon's resignation is a positive change, Milroy said, but the school's problems weren't exclusively caused by her.

MSU's board of trustees held an emotional meeting Friday afternoon, where they apologized and vowed to change.

Michigan State University athletic director Mark Hollis is retiring.

Michigan State, USA Gymnastics, and the gymnastics group's parent organization, the US Olympic Committee, have denied wrongdoing. More than a dozen women filed lawsuits alleging the school or mishandled or ignored their rape claims against football players and other students for years. They seek more changes.

She said the school needs to implement and stick with clear guidelines for reporting sexual assault.

Ex-MSU Gymnastics Coach Kathie Klages retired in February 2017, amid the Nassar scandal. "I don't think there are bylaws set up for it. Nassar is being prosecuted, Michigan State is being sued".
