In comparison to fellow Arab countries, Morocco ranks 7th, below the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman and Tunisia, said the report.

According to Asoka Obeysekara, Executive Director of TISL, they have seen a two point increase, which is illustrative of the fact that, whilst the score has improved it has improved very slowly and the improvement is only fair at best.

Meanwhile, the International Country Risk Guide's (ICRG) Political Risk services and the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Country Risk Rating repeated the same score as previous year for Thailand, 32 and 37 respectively.

The Republic attained a score of 84 in graft watchdog Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index for 2017.

The survey found that Venezuela and Haiti were again identified as having the highest levels of perceived corruption in the region, while Uruguay and Barbados were identified as having the lowest levels.

While stemming the tide against corruption takes time, in the last six years many countries have still made little to no progress.

The report clubbed India with the Philippines and the Maldives as the worst nations in the Asia Pacific in this respect. Every group concentrates on a specific aspect of corruption in a given society, with the result providing an assessment of the level of corruption in the public sector and in politics as perceived by external experts and businesses.

Transparency International also found a link to show that "countries that score low for civil liberties also tend to score high for corruption".

The TI found that nearly all journalists killed since 2012 were killed in corrupt countries.

Turkey scored 40 in the index a year ago, a one-point decrease from 2016.

Botswana's standing thus placed it within the top fifth of all surveyed nations, as well as above nearly two thirds of the nations of Europe.

He stressed the need for changing people's mindset to curb corruption. There is no corruption free country in the world. No corruption is small.

MA Mannan, state minister for finance and planning, termed the latest report as "good news", but said it was still not satisfactory.

Similarly, Indonesia has a long way to go in the fight against corruption.
