Former Playmate had affair with Donald Trump

Former Playboy Playmate of the Year opens up about her 'affair' with Donald Trump in 2006 and claims gossip magazine that bought her story tried to crush it

According to the report, it was a practice known as "catch and kill", a way to stop bombshell stories from going public. This was less than two years after Trump got married to Melania and a few months after the birth of his son, Barron. Only this time the woman is not porn star "Stormy Daniels", but Playboy playmate Karen McDougal, and the entity paying her off during the campaign (at least directly) was not his lawyer, but the National Enquirer, which is owned by a Trump pal.

The New Yorker report, by Ronan Farrow, cites dozens of pages of documents supporting her account.

Farrow wrote: "As McDougal was getting dressed to leave, Trump did something that surprised her".

According to The New Yorker, Mr Trump met Ms McDougal during a taping of his reality TV show, The Apprentice, at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. The piece alleges that McDougal wrote Trump "immediately took a liking to me, kept talking to me - telling me how handsome I was, etc..."

"This is an old story that is just more fake news", a statement provided to The New Yorker noted. "The president says he never had a relationship with McDougal", the spokesperson said. The tabloid parent company, American Media, said it didn't print McDougal's story because it didn't find it credible. "No paper trails for him", she wrote, according to Farrow. "I'm afraid to even mention his name".

They had dinner in a private bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

In one instance, when McDougal toured Trump Tower, she recalled a moment when Trump pointed out Melania's separate bedroom.

"I knew that I couldn't talk about any alleged affair with any married man, but I didn't really understand the whole content of what I gave up", she told The New Yorker.

The Wall Street Journal, four days before the 2016 USA presidential election, reported that American Media Inc, the publisher of the National Enquirer, had paid US$150,000 (NZ$203,000) for exclusive rights to McDougal's story, which it never ran. She added that Trump said he had asked his son Eric "who he thought was the most attractive girl here + Eric pointed me".

Farrow, the New Yorker reporter, first broke the stories about sexual abuse claims against Weinstein. A White House spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Those promises she said, were not fulfilled, and she now regrets signing the deal.

Melania Trump was reportedly "blindsided" by the reports of the payoff and "furious" with the President, two people close to the couple told The New York Times.

McDougal moved to Sawyer, Michigan with her mother when she was still a child, staying in the state until her modeling career took off in late 1990s. The payment was later acknowledged by Trump's longtime aide and special counsel Michael Cohen, but he refused to say why Trump made the payment.

The President has denied the affair took place.
