Mexico Ferry Explosion: At Least 25 Injured As 'Fireball' Rips Through Ship

An explosion on a ferry at a Mexican beach resort Wednesday injured at least 25 people including at least two Americans

Eighteen people were injured, local officials said, after reports of a ferry explosion Wednesday in Mexico. Footage shows the moment the ferry bursts into flames and smoke plummets from the area while people were milling about on the pier.

A ferry owned by Barcos Caribe was struck by a blast Wednesday while docked at a tourist resort town of Playa del Carmen in Mexico, according to local reports. Although the victims had minor cuts, "we have to follow the necessary protocol [surrounding] medical attention, hence the reason why they were transferred [to a hospital]", Torres added.

In a statement, the municipal government said Three Canadians and two Americans were among the injured.

The cause of the incident was unknown; however, a preliminary indication for the cause of the explosion was "mechanical failure", according to Quintana Roo officials.

The ferry sustained a substantial amount of damage.

Service to the nearby resort island of Cozumel would continue with other ferry companies that operate from the municipal dock.

Images of the ferry showed what appeared to be a two-meter-long portion of the vessel's second-floor exterior blown out, exposing splintered wood and metal.
