Oxfam chief vows to root out wrongdoing at charity

Oxfam is just the tip of the iceberg

The plan, which includes an independent commission involving women's rights experts to urgently review Oxfam's culture and practices, had been agreed with Mr Goldring, who told The Guardian he was "absolutely committed" to rooting out abuse.

"From the bottom of my heart, I am asking for forgiveness".

Ms Mordaunt said: 'We will not work with any organisation that does not live up to the high standards on safeguarding and protection that we require.

"Oxfam will be a standard bearer of safety and dignity for all who interact with us", she said on twitter.

"In taking these actions I am very aware that there are hundreds of good, courageous and compassionate people working for Oxfam around the world".

Oxfam Ireland has said it will play a "leadership role" as the global charity works to introduce reforms to "root out any form of abuse".

Mark Goldring, chief executive of Oxfam GB, admitted the organization needed to reform, but said "the scale and the intensity of the attacks feels out of proportion to the level of culpability".

"(But) the intensity and ferocity of the attacks makes you wonder, what did we do?

"I struggle to understand why they didn't respond immediately to that call for additional resource", she said.

And speaking on Question Time on Thursday night former Cabinet minister said the Government "should have asked more questions" of Oxfam after misconduct allegations against aid workers in 2011.

"This was with an honourable, mature woman, who was not an quake victim nor a prostitute".

Earlier this week at the NME Awards, Eavis' father, Michael, told the Press Association: "We've raised millions through the years with Oxfam - six million quid and everyone's said what a wonderful charity they are and we still support them. But I never gave into these advances", he said.

Oxfam has nearly 10,000 staff working in more than 90 countries across the globe.

Oxfam, one of the world's biggest disaster relief charities, apologized this week for unspecified sexual misconduct uncovered in a 2011 internal investigation.

The government has made three demands of Oxfam: that it produce a plan on how to deal with any forthcoming allegations, that it report any staff members involved in the Haiti scandal and that it fully cooperate with the Haitian authorities.

The charity is also introducing a number of immediate measures - including creating a new global database of accredited referees to combat "unreliable" references by past or current staff, and extra resources for the charity's safeguarding processes.
