PS4 System Update 5.50 Features Supersampling, Parental Controls, and More

PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 operating system's next major update has gone out, in beta, to those who signed up to test it back in January.

Sony revealed all of the fresh features and changes on the way for the PS4 by way of an official PlayStation Blog post today, with the announcement starting out by detailing a "Play Time Management" feature that allows family managers to control the amount of time child family members can play on the system.

Another useful feature is Play Time Management, which lets parents and guardians set time limits on how long children can play for. All the while, notifications will be sent to the child accounts during play so they know when to save and quit. If the game is no longer accessible because your PSN subscription lapses, a PS Plus symbol will appear on the game with a lock to note that the game is no longer accessible. Two new tabs have been added to your library, the name/avatar tab and the PS Plus tab where you'll be able to see specific content upon setting. This will be helpful for items like betas or demos that you probably won't ever use again.

Custom wallpaper had been implemented to some extent previously, but 5.50 allows you to import any image via USB to apply as your background.

Additional features include Quick Menu improvements that add shortcut buttons for media controls and access to individual friends, as well as customization options for team pages in Tournaments. If you're a longtime subscriber, there's a good chance you've racked up an unwieldy number of games that add clutter to your game library.

The PS Plus tab will show every game that users own from PS Plus' Monthly Free Games. With supersampling mode, games that render to a higher resolution when connected to a 4K TV will downscale to match the HDTV - allowing PS4 Pro owners to leverage the benefits of an image clarity boost even if they don't own a 4K TV.

Update 5.50 will include various enhancements to the Quick Menu.

If you're the type to listen to Spotify or PlayStation Music while gaming, you'll be able to access certain shortcuts, such as volume control and the ability to play or pause your music.

So while it is no PSN ID name change, the PS4 System Software Update 5.50 is quite substantial for anyone who owns a PS4 or PS4 Pro. This also works when you're playing music off a USB device.

PS4 has had support for both store themes and turning screenshots into custom backgrounds for a while now, so you were able to easily display pot-smoking grim reapers or sweet Uncharted 4 vistas as you wished.

If your Notifications tab makes you feel like you're in a particularly bad episode of Hoarders, you'll be glad to know that update 5.5 will make it possible to permanently delete any and all old notifications. Xbox One added play limits past year with the Creators Update, and the One X hardware has been supersampling games since last November.
