Push for impeach Missouri governor over sexual blackmail charges

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens Mugshot

A St. Louis grand jury has indicted Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens on a felony invasion of privacy charge for allegedly taking a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had an affair in 2015, the city circuit attorney's office said Thursday.

In a freaky bit of narrative jiu jitsu, the party somehow has laid the blame at the feet of billionaire, and bogeyman to the alt-right, George Soros.

Greitens will not attend the group's winter meeting now under way in Washington, the association's executive director, Paul Bennecke, said in a statement.

The Missouri Republican Party says the indictment against Gov. Eric Greitens amounts to a "political hit job" by a Democratic prosecutor.

Greitens' Democratic opponent suggested in an ad that the Republican was diverting money that was supposed to be used to help veterans.

In the recording, the woman says that Greitens took a photograph of her after tying her to a piece of exercise equipment in the basement, blindfolding her, and partially undressing her.

Sen. Gary Romine, a Republican from Farmington, has clashed with the governor on a number of issues, including Greitens' move past year to have a reconfigured state Board of Education fire Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven.

Susan Ryan, the prosecutor's spokeswoman, says Greitens' legal team requested a "secret" meeting involving only attorneys to share what they called the "human" side of Greitens' story.

Specifically, Greitens noted in the first minutes of his term, he signed an executive order banning lobbyist gifts to anyone who works in Missouri's executive branch.

Gardener said in a statement that it is essential for residents of Missouri to have confidence in their leaders.

"We look forward to a bipartisan committee of legislators elected by people across Missouri to find out what's really going on- ensuring St. Louis liberals aren't controlling the future of our state", Cooper said.

"I don't think his tax bill is going to go anywhere, " she said, referring to the governor's proposed tax-cut proposal. Under Missouri state law, the impeachment process of the governor begins in the Missouri House of Representatives.

Dowd in a statement to the AP said Greitens will file a motion to dismiss the charges.

He was charged in St. Louis with a first-degree felony invasion of privacy, according to the Missouri court system. The sentence for felony invasion of privacy is up to four years in prison.

Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson, Floor Leader Rob Vescovo and Speaker Pro Tem Elijah Haahr released a statement on the indictment, announcing they have begun an investigation into the matter.

"Any effort to apply (this law) to a situation between two people engaged in consensual sexual activity would be unprecedented, improper, and permit the criminalization of routine activity between consenting adults", Bennett continued.

Burlison allowed Greitens' release on a personal recognizance bond that permits him to travel freely throughout the United States.

Greitens was indicted on Thursday for allegedly threatening to release nude photos of a former mistress if she ever talked publicly about their affair.

The indictment alleges Greitens took a picture of a person in "full or partial nudity" without the person's knowledge or consent, and that Greitens then transmitted the image "in a manner that allowed access to that image via a computer".

Court documents show he's scheduled to face a judge on March 16. Greitens has admitted to the affair but says no crime was committed.
