Australian government says not planning to boycott World Cup

Foreign Minister: “The government is not considering a boycott of the World Cup”

Australia is said to be going through a diplomatic crisis as the federal government has expelled two Russian spies after a poisoning incident in the United Kingdom.

Iceland followed suit on Monday as the United States and European Union countries announced the expulsion of diplomats over the case.

At least six countries are planning a "state boycott" of Russia's upcoming 2018 World Cup after a botched nerve agent attack on British soil; announcing all government officials will stay home while their nation's athletes compete in the global soccer competition.

"We will inform everyone if such information is true", Andreeva told journalists in response to a question whether the European Commission planned to boycott the upcoming world football championship in Russian Federation this summer.

Meanwhile, Australia Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said their government is not planning to entertain a World Cup boycott.

The U.S. said on Monday it would expel 60 Russian diplomats, joining governments across Europe in punishing the Kremlin.

If May was to block the English team's involvement in the World Cup, and then persuade allies to withdraw, the tournament would be all but over.

A total of 16 E.U. member states, other European countries, the USA, and Canada announced on Monday that they would be expelling Russian diplomats over the Sergei Skripal case. 2018 World Cup will be held in Russia from June 14 to July 15 in eleven Russian cities.

The final tournament will involve 32 national teams, which include 31 teams determined through qualifying competitions and the automatically qualified host team.

"When I was asked about it yesterday I was referring to the fact that Britain, for example, pursued an option of announcing that the Royal Family would not be attending the World Cup, but Australia is not considering a boycott".

A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities.
