Iran lauds Russian veto of UN Yemen resolution as "defeat for US"

Russia vetoes anti-Iran UN Security Council resolution

In March 2015, a Saudi-led, US -backed coalition began what has turned into a devastating war that has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced 2 million, and created the world's greatest humanitarian crisis.

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday lauded Russia's veto of a Britain-drafted resolution accusing Iran of violating the UN arms embargo on Yemeni rebels, calling it a "defeat" for the United States.

Britain, France, Germany and the USA urged Iran to "immediately cease all activities that are inconsistent or would violate" the United Nations resolution that established the arms embargo in 2015.

Iran, according to Resolution 2231, is prohibited from "the supply, sale, transfer, manufacture, maintenance, or use of arms" to other parties until 2020.

The draft resolution, backed by France and the United States, called for unspecified measures in response to the UN report about Iran's alleged role in Yemen, stressing that the UNSC will take "additional measures to address these violations", and that "any activity related to the use of ballistic missiles in Yemen" is a criteria for sanctions.

The four Western powers signed the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran along with Russian Federation and China.

The Saudis lead an Arab coalition that has backed Yemen's government in its four-year civil war against the Huthis with a devastating bombing campaign since 2015.

Air strikes killed nine civilians and wounded at least six on Wednesday in two separate attacks in north and west Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthi movement, residents said. Saudi Arabia views the Houthis as an Iranian proxy.

The Western powers in their statement called on all parties in the conflict to return to peace talks and comply with worldwide humanitarian and human rights law, including allowing food and medical aid shipments into all of the country's ports and airports.

The US administration maintains that Iran is not living up to its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, which President Donald Trump has criticised as the "worst ever".

In response to the vote, US Ambassador Nikki Haley accused Russian Federation of shielding Iran and warned the United States would consider other ways to take action against Tehran.
