Transgender Wrestler Booed After Winning Girls Wrestling Title

Transgender wrestler Mack Beggs is booed after second straight state title win | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Beggs, who began transitioning from female to male a few years ago, wrestles in the girls' division under University Interscholastic League rules, which mandate that athletes compete as the gender listed on their birth certificate, according to the Morning News' SportsDay.

The transgender senior from Euless Trinity High School just outside Dallas, Texas, took her record to a flawless 32-0 in a Houston area tournament, the UIL State Wrestling Championships at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas, against her non-testosterone-taking challenger, Chelsea Sanchez, who she also beat in 2017 for the same title - but not without controversy.

"He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles", Beggs' mother, Angela McNew told the AP. He receives low-level testosterone injections and wants to wrestle against boys. "It has more to do with skill and discipline than strength".

The teen is hoping to pursue a career in wrestling, with the hope of taking up an out-of-state school scholarship and competing in the NCAA and, ultimately, the Olympics, where there are rules allowing for athletes to compete as the gender they identify with. However, he completes in the girl's division because Texas public high schools require athletes to go by the sex on their birth certificate.

A high school girl using steroids to help her transition to "male" has won her second girls' wrestling tournament.

The wrestling champion's treatments have so far given her a mustache and a deep, male-sounding voice. It states that the state's high school athletics organization, the University Interscholastic League, can "declare a student ineligible for competition on the basis of steroid use" even if the student is taking the substances for "a valid medical goal".

Along the road to Begg's 2017 victory, two girls forfeited their matches against Beggs when ordered by parents to do so. "This year, there was one forfeit".

"It just comes down to technique and who has the most heart. Beggs and his family have repeatedly said he [she] wants to compete against boys".

"It definitely felt different", Beggs told The Dallas Morning News' Sports Day.

Last year, the 18-year-old beat Sanchez for the championship. "No matter who you put in front of me, I am a champion". He now has scholarship offer to a small college, where he was promised a spot on the men's wrestling team next season.

Last year Beggs was the subject of a lawsuit surrounding his decision to continue to fight in female competitions, and it seems that the situation he is being placed in is unfair on both him and his competitors. "I would rather have a chance to compete than not compete at all".
