Area students to take part in national walkouts 19 years after Columbine

Brighton High School students plan to walk out

In the midst of their grief, the student survivors of the Stoneman Douglas massacre have banded together and inspired a new student-led push for gun reform, with nationwide events such as school walkouts and the March for Our Lives rallies.

Students from around the Valley are expected to take part in a national walkout to protest gun violence Friday.

Most of the national walkouts are planning to take 13 seconds of silence to remember the 13 killed at Columbine High School in 1999.

The walkout is just the latest gun violence protest since a massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

More than 2,500 walkout events are planned across the country. It is our hope that should more walkouts occur on April 20th, the demonstrations continue to be peaceful and respectful.

Organizers include the groups National School Walkout DC, Students Demand Action DMV and Montgomery County Students for Gun Control.

A majority of USA teenagers and parents say they are afraid a shooting could happen at their schools, according to a Pew survey published Wednesday. It's as if the politicians believe that if they say and do nothing, everyone will forget about the people who died, until the next mass shooting.

Capitol Police are allowing a stretch of 9th Street between Grace and Bank Streets, as a drop off/pickup area for any students participating in the rally.

Instead of walking out of class, Marion County students will constructively use a 30-minute time period to exchange ideas, discuss differing opinions, and offer hard-thought solutions on how our community should address school tragedies like the Parkland, Florida shooting in February.

"We've been dealing with this for 19 years", he said, explaining how he's going to be part of the day's events. The goal is to give students a platform to share and discuss their ideas for improving school safety, Begor said. Most held a vigil and demonstration on school grounds, and then went back to class.

"We are advocating for safer schools and since we have mentioned it, there is now a school safety committee at Scott County High School", Coleman said in a Twitter message.

Students attending the downtown event are calling for required background checks for all transfers of firearms between licensed and unlicensed parties, state licenses for all firearms dealers, firearm registration and licenses for all gun owners, as well as an end to concealed carry in schools, places of worship and public transportation, among other changes. "Principal Jason Miller said the school is "'honoring the Columbine community's request to commemorate April 20th as a day of service. Students were advised that they will be marked as absent and receive a one-period "cut", which translates to detention. "Eighteen and older is the way we do it, in this country", said Dr. Perry.

"We recommend students do not go to school that day, that way schools can not stop them from participating and the event will not be considered school affiliated", a statement from local organizers said.
