Trump may hate Amazon, but there's little he could do to it

President Donald Trump styles himself a business-friendly leader. But just this month his administration imposed tariffs on steel aluminum and Chinese goods. I

Do his criticisms ring true?

The online retailer has been continuously adding products which are ready to be shipped for next day or two day deliveries.

The president's jab comes as the solicitor general, who represents the federal government before the U.S. Supreme Court, is siding with South Dakota's attempt to overturn the high court's 1992 decision barring states from taxing out-of-state sellers who lack an in-state physical presence.

Amazon does in fact collect sales tax on its direct sales in every state that has one, but it may not be collecting local, municipal sales taxes. Are packages to the White House not being delivered on time?

That's translated to more packages and package-related revenue, in part thanks to Amazon. Cloudtail reported revenues of nearly Rs 5,900 crore for the financial year ending March 2017.

"Although we continue to win customers and grow our package business, these gains are not sufficient to offset continuing declines in our mail business, which is our main source of revenue and contribution", Postmaster General and CEO Megan Brennan said last month. In the 2017 fiscal year, the agency reported a net loss of $2.7 billion; the previous three years, it incurred losses of almost twice that amount. In 2006, Congress mandated that the postal service prepay benefits, a special requirement other agencies do not face.

Trump's ire for Amazon, and Bezos, is no secret.

President-elect Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with technology industry leaders at Trump Tower in New York, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016.

"A lot of people have made this, with respect to Amazon, about personalities and the CEO at Amazon - we're talking about Jeff Bezos here", he said on Thursday on the Fox News channel. Also, congrats, you got a fresh batch of Rage at Amazon Dot Com again, today.

In a 2017 statement, Amazon said that its partnership with the Postal Service was "reviewed annually by the Postal Regulatory Commission", which found its contracts to be profitable. And while the Postal Service has lost money for years, online shopping has led to growth in its package-delivery business. "I don't think it can be stopped but I don't think he can target one company".

Trump re-opened debate on two of those issues in a tweet Thursday. "Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state & local governments, use our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the U.S.), and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business!"

Inc. cut ties with Washington's top lobbying firms and brought on new advisers following passage of the tax overhaul bill previous year and in the face of new challenges in the age of President Donald Trump.

Stifel analyst Scott Devitt said the e-retailer collects sales taxes in the 45 states that have state sales taxes and the District of Columbia.

Such a ruling would pave the way for states to expand tax collection for online sales across the board.

Amazon is not involved in the case but the eventual ruling could have consequences for the online retailing behemoth and other e-commerce businesses.

Analysts at Stifel said the president's tweets on the topics does not seem "detrimental to Amazon".

"So for Amazon there really is a big advantage on the state sales tax because of current policy", Hassett said.

According to the Axios story, Trump doesn't believe Amazon pays its fair share of sales tax. "Towns, cities and states throughout the USA are being hurt - many jobs being lost!"
