Facebook better at policing nudity than hate speech

Facebook bans 583 million fake accounts

Only 38% of the deleted posts with hate speech and xenophobia was discovered AI.

The report details Facebook's enforcement efforts from October to March and covers hate speech, fake accounts and spam, terrorist propaganda, graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity.

Facebook said it released the report to start a dialog about harmful content on the platform, and how it enforces community standards to combat it.

Facebook in the first quarter of 2018 removed 583 million bogus accounts, or 3-4% of the monthly audience.

Key to fighting spam is taking down the fake accounts that spread it.

The number of posts on Facebook showing graphic violence rose in the first quarter of this year from the preceding three months, possibly driven by the war in Syria, the company said on Tuesday. A Washington Post report earlier this month found that the company's facial-recognition tool, which the company says could help spot impostor accounts, reviews only a small fraction of the site's roughly 2 billion monthly active users. It said it estimates that between 7 and 9 views out of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on the social media platform were of content that violated the company's adult nudity and pornography standards.

On Tuesday, May 15, Guy Rosen, Facebook's Vice President of Product Management, posted a blog post on the company's newsroom.

Facebook has been in hot water following allegations of data privacy violations by Cambridge Analytica, an election consultancy that improperly harvested information from millions of Facebook users for the Brexit campaign and Donald Trump's U.S. presidency bid. Facebook said that Zuckerberg "has no plans to travel to the United Kingdom", said Damian Collins, the leader of the UK's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, in a statement Tuesday. Facebook noted that while its artificial intelligence technology found and flagged many standard violations, more progress needed to be done.

"Artificial intelligence isn't good enough yet to determine whether someone is pushing hate or describing something that happened to them so they can raise awareness of the issue", said Rosen. It's detection algorithm is better at detecting some categories than others; and Facebook admits that hate speech still represents a detection problem. Facebook is expected to host summits in India, Singapore, and the U.S. "We tend to find and flag less of it, and rely more on user reports, than with some other violation types".

"(And) technology needs large amounts of training data to recognise meaningful patterns of behaviour, which we often lack in less widely used languages", Mr Rosen said.

"Today's report gives you a detailed description of our internal processes and data methodology".

Last month Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced criticism from civil society groups in Myanmar over how his company failed to detect violent messages from spreading across Facebook Messenger.
