Kim Jong Un holds second meeting with Xi Jinping in China

Kim Jong-un speaks out in favor of denuclearizing Korean Peninsula at talks with Xi

According to reports, Xi hosted a banquet for Kim, "took a stroll" with him, and assured him that China supported the direction that North Korea was taking economically.

China is North Korea's only major ally, although trade between them has plummeted in recent months as Beijing enforces United Nations economic sanctions in response to the North's nuclear bomb and ballistic missile tests.

The front pages of Chinese evening newspapers show China's President Xi Jinping meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Beijing on March 28.

Kim was likely seeking guidance from the Chinese leader ahead of his high-profile summit with Trump, according to former British charge d'affaires to North Korea Jim Hoare.

But after months of saber-rattling, and a historic summit between Kim and the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, the mood is decidedly more upbeat, and Trump has said a date and location are already set - though he did not divulge any specifics.

The North Korean official flew in a private plane and arrived at Dalian airport on Monday amid heavy security, Yonhap said. DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is the official acronym for North Korea.

The pair reportedly met in Dalian, where Xi will attend a ceremony launching the country's first domestically-built aircraft carrier.

In an unprecedented meeting at the demilitarized zone separating the two countries, Kim became the first North Korean leader to step into South Korean territory since 1953.

In the past, North Korean leaders have been reluctant to travel by air on worldwide journeys, especially Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, who famously went everywhere in his personal armored train.

The escalation began as an effort by Trump to reverse the trend of rising trade deficits the USA has with China, which hit a record US$375 billion in 2017 and has continued rising this year.

Shortly after the news of Kim-Xi summit in Dalian, Trump said he would speak with Xi on North Korea.

Moon said Kim was "a very open and practical person" and both leaders had a mutual goal for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. It said the West's viewpoint that China was afraid of getting sidelined in the diplomatic parleys that are being conducted between North Korea, South Korea and the United States was "misleading" since China had a fundamentally indispensable role in achieving peace in the peninsula.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin last week led a delegation of seven top economic advisers, including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, to Beijing for a two-day visit with a team of Chinese counterparts led by Vice-Premier Liu He.

Posts about unusual traffic jams and security in Dalian popped up on Chinese social media.

Pompeo, who first traveled to North Korea as Central Intelligence Agency chief in early April, is only the second sitting secretary of state to visit the reclusive nation with which it is still technically at war. This also came after the mercurial leader vowed to denuclearise the Korean peninsula and end the decades-long war with South Korea.
