Philip Roth Has Died at 85

Philip Roth: A literary life in seven stages

How Philip Roth's Writing Transcended The Narrow Confines Of A Culture Philip Roth, one of the country's most celebrated writers, has died at 85.

His friend Judith Thurman also confirmed the news and described him as "incredibly generous person", according to CNN.

Roth won virtually every literary honour, including the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral, in 1998. His career spanned 50 years, 30 books, three PEN/Faulkners, two National Book Awards, and one Pulitzer.

"You can't invent out of nothing, or I can't certainly", he said in a 2011 documentary.

"It's a bit like hearing that Keith Richards has given up rock and roll, or that the Pope is abandoning religion", the critic James Walton wrote at the time.

"I had reached the end".

Simon wrote on Twitter: "Kaddish for Philip Roth, the great American novelist of our postwar world". "As for how Trump threatens us, I would say that, like the anxious and fear-ridden families in my book, what is most terrifying is that he makes any and everything possible, including, of course, the nuclear catastrophe", he said.

After the 2016 election, many opined Roth's 2004 novel foreshadowed the conditions America would go through under Trump's presidency, including the rise of xenophobia.

For his conclusion, he quoted Joe Lewis, the heavyweight boxing champion of the 1930s and '40s: "I did the best I could with what I had".

The novel's alternative American history, which imagines Franklin D. Roosevelt being defeated in 1940 by Charles Lindbergh, an aviator with pro-Nazi leanings, led some left-wing critics to draw comparisons with Mr Trump's populist sweep to power.

He published his debut collection of short stories, "Goodbye, Columbus", at the age of 26 - a close-to-the-bone look at the materialist values of the Jewish immigrant milieu in which grew up.

Eight of Roth's novels were adapted into films, including "Goodbye, Columbus", "Portnoy's Complaint", "The Human Stain", "The Dying Animal", "Elegy", "The Humbling", "Indignation" and "American Pastoral".

In this March 22, 1993 file photo, American author Philip Roth is seen during an interview promoting his new book 'Operation Shylock: A Confession, ' in NY. He was well known for writing about the Jewish experience, as well as American ideals, personal identity, and the human body, through autobiographical fiction.

The book's narrator and frequent Roth alter ego Nathan Zuckerman tells the story of his former high-school classmate, Swede, whose suburban life is destroyed when his daughter becomes involved with a domestic terrorist group.

Claire Bloom was his second wife, with the pair exchanging vows in 1990 and separating in 1995.

"We all wanted to be Philip Roth".

He added: "Improbably, I had the honor of meeting Philip Roth just a few months ago to discuss an adaptation of Plot Against America".
