China to retaliate after United States imposes tariffs on $50 billion in imports

EU backs retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports

On June 15, the United States announced additional tariffs of 25 percent on Chinese imports worth approximately 50 billion U.S. dollars.

Since the U.S. -China trade dispute started in March, U.S. soybean prices have fallen about 12 percent.

"China does not want a trade war", it said, adding that it would "fight back vigorously" in defense of its national interests, globalization and the world trade system.

China has also compiled a list of $50 billion in USA products that would face retaliatory tariffs, including agricultural products that could potentially harm Trump's large voter base in rural areas.

"We will immediately take tariff measures of the same scale and intensity".

At the same time, President Donald Trump denied Friday that he was engaged in a "trade war" with China. From July 6, additional tariffs will be levied on some 34 billion USA dollars worth of Chinese products.

Trump has already slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, Europe and Japan, drawing a rebuke from US allies.

"The United States can no longer tolerate losing our technology and intellectual property through unfair economic practices", Trump said in the statement.

Donald Trump has approved a plan to impose punishing tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of Chinese goods as early as Friday. The move eroded a lot of the bonhomie of past weeks when the USA and China worked together on the North Korean nuclear issue and U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo met Chinese President Xi Jinping and foreign minister Wang Yi during his visit to Beijing on Saturday.

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo raised the trade issue directly with China on Thursday, when he met President Xi Jinping and other officials in Beijing, the State Department said. He again complained that he had been blindsided by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's criticism of his tariff threats at a summit-ending news conference.

The administration is leaving the door open to further tariffs on agricultural goods and other products.

The administration also is targeting another 284 Chinese products, which the administration says benefit from China's aggressive industrial policies, worth $16 billion a year but won't impose those tariffs until it collects public comment.

She said a trade war would lead to "losers on both sides" and could have a "serious" impact.

China is the world's No. 2 economy behind the U.S.

Earlier this month, Washington introduced 25-percent tariffs on steel imports and 10-percent levies on aluminum imports from the EU, Canada, and Mexico.
