Sixers trade 39th pick in National Basketball Association draft to Lakers

McDonough Suns Kawhi

Leonard and head coach Gregg Popovich met earlier this week in an effort to possibly the mend the relationship.

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired the 39th overall draft pick in the 2018 NBA Draft from the Philadelphia 76ers, reports ESPN's Adrian Wojnaworski. Furthermore, Leonard reportedly plans on telling other potential suitors that he won't re-sign with them in 2019 when he becomes a free agent, as he prepares to sign in LA. Leonard is a bona fide top-five player.

Leonard, a two-time All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year who was the 2013-14 NBA Finals MVP, played just nine games with the Spurs last season after acrimony with the franchise about the condition of his lingering quadriceps injury.

The Lakers' own first round pick, No. 10 overall, belongs to the Sixers as a result of the 2012 trade that brought Steve Nash to Los Angeles.

With only three-four potential openings on their roster going into 2018, free agency notwithstanding, the 76ers simply can't keep five, let alone six players moving forward, and while they could obviously draft a foreign player and stash them overseas, like they did past year when they traded up to select Latvian center Anzejs Pasecniks 25th overall, those prospects seldom turn into starters, let alone solid role players. With plenty of young assets, the Lakers could have packaged something together to acquire said player and try for an immediate rebuild around said player. This move has all of the signs of them potentially looking for something bigger, but a big deal might not fall into place.

Leonard attended the private memorial service for Popovichs late wife, Erin, in San Antonio after the season ended, and he interacted with team officials.

During his lone season in San Antonio, Gay served in a reserve capacity for the first time in his 11-year National Basketball Association career. They've made smart move after smart move over the past year or so; we will see if they continue them and hold off the temptation to drain their roster and assets.
