Trump misrepresents North Korea's actions

Trump has voiced his irritation at US critics' assessment that the brief pact he and Kim signed at their Singapore summit was not specific enough to ensure an end to North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

U.S. President Donald Trump will talk with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the phone for the first time this week, and senior U.S. and North Korean officials will start to discuss details of denuclearization.

Meanwhile Friday, the White House released a statement from the president outlining plans to address "unfair practices" China has engaged in with regards to trade. It is premature to say the threat posed has gone or that the summit has made a substantial change.

North Korean people stand at attention for Kim Jong Un because they will be shot if they don't. In one particularly bad sound byte, the president said that Kim is a "strong head" and admired the way that the - I repeat - dictator commands "his people".

"To no one's surprise, North Korea used our President for their propaganda campaign", Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said on Twitter.

While the agreement fell short of outlining concrete measures that would lead to Kim giving up his nuclear weapons program - the stated long-term goal of USA negotiators - it gave Trump and Kim a piece of paper to point to as a sign of progress and a symbol of goodwill.

After Fox News host Bret Baier called Kim Jong Un a "killer" who is "clearly executing people", Trump responded that "he's a tough guy". Trump talks directly to the camera and praises his talks with Kim as "open, honest, direct and very, very productive". "And I mean, he is the strong head", Trump remarked.

He also hinted at the possibility of inviting Kim Jong-un to the White House.

While Trump engaged in weeks of self-promoting followed by a round of self-congratulatory interviews and press conferences, the report suggests the deal amounted to little more than a showboat effort. "He speaks and his people sit up at attention".

North Korea has perpetuated human rights abuses for decades. "You don't understand sarcasm", he told reporters. But Pyongyang saw things differently, labeling the drills as a "grave provocation" that threatened to escalate the region "to the brink of nuclear war".

Interested in North Korea?

Trump said president Barack Obama told him before he took office that the "most risky problem" for the United States was North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Trump on Sunday also re-posted one of his tweets from last week that contained multiple, previously unreported photographs from the G7 summit showing Trump smiling and seeming comfortable with other world leaders.
