Trump Plans To Announce Supreme Court Pick July 9

Gorsuch shows how much 1 vote matters on Supreme court - 660 NEWS

The president said he is considering two women among a group of at least five potential candidates for the nation's high court. "I like them all", he said.

Trump's comments are the latest sign he is moving rapidly to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement this week.

For years, the conservative has served as the tie-breaking vote on some of the country's biggest cases, siding with liberals on issues such as abortion, gay rights and granting constitutional rights to terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay. Trump's first Supreme Court appointee, Justice Neil Gorsuch, came from that initial list.

Asked if the United States would recognize Crimea as part of Russia, Trump said: "We're going to have to see".

Three women now serve on the bench: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Flake could unilaterally block any judicial nominee from advancing beyond the Senate Judiciary Committee by voting with the Democrats in opposition. "We'll see what Russian Federation does", Trump said.

Trump has promised to draw the next justice from a list of 25 prospective candidates that was first established during the 2016 presidential campaign and updated last fall.

After blocking a circuit court nominee from Georgia earlier this month, Flake told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that he planned to block appellate court judges in exchange for a Senate vote on reining in Trump's tariff powers. Both were being closely vetted, Politico said, citing a person familiar with White House thinking on the nomination. The Wall Street Journal has jokingly dubbed former Democratic Senate Majority Leader Reid a "Republican mastermind." Some have theorized that Utah Senator Mike Lee might be a strong contender, and the president did specifically mention him in talking with reporters on Air Force One. "It's a great group of intellectual talent. they are generally conservative", Trump said. There are plenty of theories floating around, and he says that he anticipates interviewing six or seven potential candidates.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is retiring at the end of July, was considered the swing vote on the court to uphold abortion rights. "I am confident we will take up and confirm the nominee this year before the election".

This will be the Trump administration's second appointment to the Supreme Court. They paid back Reid with interest, slowing nominations to a crawl and in 2016, when McConnell declared even before President Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland that no nominee, whatever his or her background, would receive a hearing or a vote.

The partisan wrangling at the time will surely pale in comparison to the vigorous fight anticipated for Kennedy's replacement.

"We call on President Trump to nominate someone who will be an independent jurist who can garner broad bipartisan support and who values equality and justice for all, not just the wealthy and powerful".

Democrats had focused on Flake as their best hope to stall Trump's Supreme Court pick.

That would put a new justice in place before the congressional midterm elections in November, when all seats in the House of Representatives and a third of those in the Senate will be contested.
