U.S. soldier killed, five wounded in 'enemy attack' in Somalia

US military service member killed in Somalia attack

Sgt. Conrad was killed and four other commandos were wounded Friday during an operation against the militants, the USA military said.

US President Donald Trump offered his condolences via Twitter.

There are roughly 500 US troops and two military headquarters there.

The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) said the incident took place during a joint operation in Jubaland in southern Somalia conducted by combined Somali National Security Forces (SNSF), Kenyan Defense Force (KDF) and the U.S. special forces.

It was the first known United States combat death in Africa since an ambush in Niger in October, the New York Times reports.

USA forces have been working with the Somali government to fight the al-Shabab terror group, which has publicly boasted of its alliance with al-Qaeda and has been fighting Somalia's internationally recognized government for control of the country since the militant group was ousted from Mogadishu in 2011 by African Union-led forces.

Four other service members were wounded.

Conrad joined the U.S. Army on June 1, 2010. Al-Shabab has been blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed more than 500 people last October. The U.S. had pulled out of the Horn of Africa nation after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

But it still has a strong presence in regions around the capital. The overarching goal in Somalia for the Defense Department is to help the Somali government in providing a safe and secure environment for the Somali population, they added.

Associated Press video on Friday showed Somali forces firing weapons from atop pickup trucks in a muddy rural area, and an unidentified USA soldier speaking with local residents.

The October attack in Niger raised questions in Washington about the US military presence across Africa as the Trump administration focuses counterterrorism efforts on a range of groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.

A U.S. Africa Command statement said the four were in the care of the U.S. Embassy medical team in neighboring Kenya.

Another U.S. servicemember in Somalia was killed in May 2017 during an operation about 40 miles west of Mogadishu. The U.S. military said its personnel had provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission.
