Donald Trump urged to avoid controversial Supreme Court pick

Donald Trump

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) potentially revealed clues as to who President Donald Trump will nominate to the Supreme Court in a recent op-ed. Foreseeing inevitable news break-ins to offer coverage and analysis, broadcasters are rejiggering their primetime lineups so as to keep too much fresh summer fare from being preempted.

Mr Trump is due to make his announcement on Monday.

According to National Public Radio (NPR), Trump has reduced the names of the potential nominees to three judges - Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Raymond Kethledge.

Asked about the details of the selection process, Trump said he had it down to four people.

"I think in regards to Kethledge and Tom Hardiman they are a little less known by conservatives and their records are a little bit lighter so it might take some time", Leo told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Outside adviser Leonard Leo, now on leave from the Federalist Society, said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that this kind of jockeying is standard, noting that "every potential nominee before announcement gets concerns expressed about them by people who might ultimately support them".

Cuccinelli has said he prefers either Judge Amy Coney Barrett or Sen.

"Just as he did with Neil Gorsuch, the president has promised to nominate an impartial judge, a wise and seasoned jurist committed to upholding the Constitution at all costs". But Democratic lawmakers, who have a minority of seats in both houses of Congress, have acknowledged there is no clear path to block Trump's Supreme Court pick. While Barrett is problematic on the abortion issue, Kavanaugh is unpopular among some Republican senators because of his track record as staff secretary under President George W Bush.

Mr Thapar, 49, a Cincinnati-based federal appeals court judge, was among the first four candidates interviewed by Mr Trump on July 2.

The announcement is likely to set off a major confirmation battle in the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow majority and where opposition Democrats are planning to wage a fight over Trump's court pick.

"I'll have a decision made in my mind by Sunday". He also called the court's majority approach a "radical extension of the Supreme Court's abortion jurisprudence".

"The vast majority of American people, shown by poll after poll, want Roe v. Wade to be preserved", Blumenthal said.

The issue is that with Senator John McCain out because of his brain cancer, the Republicans can not lose any votes and still get confirmation. "We've been talking about this for 36 years, going all the way back to the nomination of Sandra O'Connor", he said.
