NBS News reported that US officials think Kim Jong Un has actually increased its production of fuel for nuclear weapons at hidden facilities, despite the leader's landmark summit with the US President last month.

Trump defended his decision to suspend "war games" with close ally South Korea - a significant concession to North Korea, which so far has suspended nuclear and missile tests and destroyed tunnels at its nuclear test site but not taken further concrete steps to denuclearize.

"We have developed a program", Bolton said, "...about really how to dismantle all of their WMD [weapons of mass destruction] and ballistic missile programmes in a year".

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday talks with North Korea were "going well" as US officials seek to reach an agreement with Pyongyang over a denuclearisation plan.

United States intelligence officials told NBC News that Pyongyang is increasing its nuclear fuel production.

Surely, there would at least be a short pause, with North Korea giving some space to the South Koreans and the Chinese to ratchet down the tension and give the real negotiators a chance to put together some kind of agreement more in line with those that had been done in the past.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies report found that North Korea has recently expanded a factory complex in the eastern city of Hamhung that produces key engines for solid-fuel ballistic missiles. And it is to North Korea's advantage to dismantle very quickly.

Appearing on CBS's Face the Nation, Bolton said he did not want to comment on the reports or on "anything related to intelligence" - NBC having quoted more than a dozen senior USA intelligence officials and the Post four.

But satellite images have shown that in recent months North Korea has continued to work on a nuclear facility and missile factory, prompting some analysts to suggest Mr. Kim had already double-crossed Mr. Trump.

A strategy by David Albright at the Institute for Science and International Security suggests the USA needs to get Kim to disclose a complete list of all his nuclear program sites and materials, including uranium and plutonium.

Asia expert Patrick Cronin called the NBC and Washington Post reports "extremely worrisome".

An NBC News report on Friday quoted officials saying USA intelligence agencies believe North Korea has increased production of fuel for nuclear weapons at multiple secret sites in recent months and may try to hide these while seeking concessions in talks with the United States.

The State Department said Pompeo would head from Pyongyang to Tokyo on Saturday, where he would discuss North Korean denuclearization with Japanese and South Korean leaders.

The American president was full of praise for his "very smart" North Korean counterpart, describing their "very special bond" and a total shift in Washington's relationship with Pyongyang. "What I can tell you is that we're continuing to make progress", she said.

"There's not any starry-eyed feeling among the group doing this", he said. "We are going to pursue this, and we will see what happens".
