Samsung earnings growth slows on smartphone slump

The Galaxy X phone is rumored to integrate a 7.3-inch display that measures 4.5-inch when folded

Rumors regarding the Galaxy X have been heating up. The Korean giant's projections for Q2 2018 missed analysts estimates as sales fell 0.7 percent, a drop that's been attributed to the stagnant smartphone market and weaker-than-expected sales of the Galaxy S9. In retrospect, it was a brilliant move that paid off handsomely, pushing Samsung to come up with better devices, and, in turn, pushing Apple to make better iPhones. It's probably why Apple wasn't afraid to charge $1,000 for the iPhone X.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S10 in February 2019. It's possible the mid-sized Galaxy S10 could also come with the "super wide-angle" lens instead of the telephoto lens seen on the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9.

While these aren't numbers to be sniffed at, especially as it marks an 11 per cent increase in profit year on year, it's a far cry from the first quarter of 2017, during which Samsung recorded its strongest results ever with 15.64 trillion won in profit from revenue of 60.56 trillion won.

The company is slated to begin a pilot manufacturing run of flexible OLED screens; Korean outlet ET News reports that these could be incorporated into what's being called the Galaxy X phone, which will go into production next year.

The Korean technology giant said Friday it expects its operating profit last quarter dropped by 5.4% compared with the previous three months, to 14.8 trillion won ($13.2 billion)-the first such quarterly fall for nearly two years. Earlier reports claimed that it's the other way around and the S10 would be launched earlier than its predecessor. "For display, we expect review to decline by 10 percent quarter-on-quarter due to a decline in LCD prices and weak demand for iPhone X in the second quarter of 2018".

It doesn't help Samsung that the entire smartphone business is in a slump right now either.
