Statue of Liberty Climber Speaks Out Against Trump Immigration Policy

Police: Newspaper gunman planned deadly attack carefully

A WOMAN is facing multiple federal charges after she scaled the Statue of Liberty in NY to protest President Trump's immigration policy. She said she did it because of the Trump administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy, which has separated thousands of young children from their parents. "I wouldn't have done it", the Republican president said Thursday night, praising the bravery of police officers who ascended the statue's base and persuaded her to climb down.

Her attorney, Rhidaya Shodhan Trivedi, told reporters: "We are going to keep fighting until family separation is a thing of the past".

Therese Okoumou, 44, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with trespassing, interference with agency functions and disorderly conduct, prosecutors said.

The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, has become a worldwide symbol of American values.

She climbed 25 feet up Lady Liberty from the public observation deck and perched up there for hours as officers tried to talk her down.

An activist group called Rise and Resist said on Facebook that Okoumou was part of a Fourth of July protest at the base of the statue against immigration policy.

"But I think the message was sent: No child belongs in a cage", she said outside of court.

The National Park Service evacuated more than 4,000 visitors off Liberty Island as a precaution.

Okoumou, 44, is a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo but now resides in Staten Island and has lived in New York for roughly a decade, according to New York Daily News. Okoumou, as usual, went high. "Trump has wrecked this country apart".

Okoumou was protesting with Rise and Resist, a group committed "to opposing, disrupting and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and our civil liberties", according to the group's website.

"Our beloved first lady that I care so much about said when they go low, we go high, and I went as high as I could", Okoumou said, adding that she would not be able to do so again because "the judge told me not to".

Police earlier indicated that seven other protesters from her group may have encouraged Okoumou to climb the statue, but her colleagues have said that they were not aware of her decision.

More than two hours after she was first spotted, the NYPD ESU officers, wearing harnesses, grabbed her as she was putting on her sneakers. She is due back in court August 3.

Okoumou, of Staten Island, was born and educated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but she has lived in NY for at least 10 years now, records have indicated.
